No Seperation

16 Am Jur 2d, Sec 177 late 2d, Sec 256:
It is time to put this straight.

The first Amendment to the Constitution reads. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Our founders were aware of the damage done to a government when that government was being told what to do by a church. Even during the early part of this country, states were fighting amongst themselves over state religions. When it came time to establish the Constitution, they wanted to make sure that didn’t happen. They wrote in essence that Congress, the law making body of our government, couldn’t make any laws that would support a federal religion. Therefore, no person subject to those laws was bound by a federal church.

They also wrote Congress can make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion. Therefore, every person subject to those laws need never fear that the could practice religion freely.

Many of our founders were Christian. Some were Deists, some other religions. Do you think in your wildest imagination that they intended to keep religion or prayer out of government? Of course they didn’t. Governments are made up of men and women who pray and have spiritual lives.

They prayed in Congress. The y supported religion in many ways. Some of the government buildings have religious symbols and sayings. They talked about how you couldn’t have a civilized society without God.

Now we have people who are trying to tear that down. They are missing the intent of our founders who never wanted to keep God out of government. They simply didn’t want the government establishing a federal church.
